Donating stock or securities offers a number of benefits. By gifting appreciated securities held long-term to APF, you may be able to eliminate capital gains tax exposure and take a charitable deduction in the amount of the fair market value of the shares. The donation you make and the deductions you receive will be greater than if you were to sell the shares and donate the cash proceeds instead.
Please contact Ana Becerra, Major Gifts Officer, at ana@apfmail.org for more information.
Note: Stock owned for one year or less is considered a short-term asset and usually won’t produce attractive tax benefits. Additionally, if your stock has decreased in value, selling it and making a cash gift to APF probably is more beneficial. You can take a capital loss on federal taxes and still enjoy a charitable deduction as allowable under the law.
Planned giving is a powerful tool. When we decide how our money will be used after we’re gone, it’s a final statement about our philosophies and beliefs. In the end, it’s all about the legacy we choose to leave behind. Please contact Ana Becerra, Major Gifts Officer, at ana@apfmail.org for more information.
Additionally, there are immediate benefits of some planned giving options. Through a planned gift, donors can:
- Increase their current income or that of a designated beneficiary
- Reduce income tax liability
- Avoid capital gains tax and/or
- Pass assets on to family and pay less tax.
Types of planned gifts include:
Gifts by Will
These are the most common planned gifts and an easy way to ensure APF continues to advance treatment of individuals diagnosed with ASD through research, training, and professional standards.
Gifts by Revocable Living Trust
Revocable Living Trusts are popular in estate planning and resemble Wills that contain instructions for managing personal assets during your lifetime and for the distribution of assets after your death.
Gifts by Charitable Gift Annuity
A Charitable Gift Annuity is a simple contract between you and APF that allows you to donate cash or securities and receive fixed annual payments for life.
Gifts by Charitable Remainder Trust
A Charitable Remainder Trust provides substantial financial and tax benefits for the donor, as well as significant gifts to APF.
Gifts by Life Insurance
Life Insurance can be a convenient way to make a substantial gift to APF for a relatively modest annual cost.
IRA Minimum Distribution Gifts
Federal law requires people age 70 ½ and older to take a Required Minimum Distribution annually from their IRA account(s), increasing their taxable income. However, if the distribution is made directly to APF, you can transfer up to $100,000 per year without paying income tax on the transaction. If you file a joint tax return, your spouse can also make a charitable contribution up to $100,000, meaning couples can exclude up to $200,000 of their retirement savings from income tax if they donate it to APF.
