Utilizing the Teaching Interaction Procedure to Train Special Education Teachers & Behavior Technicians in Behavioral Artistry

Richard Foxx (1985, 1995) outlined several traits that distinguished behavior technicians from behavioral artists. Recently, these features have been added to the growing body of work around compassionate care in behavior analysis. This presentation explores some specific responses associated with behavioral artistry, the social validity of these responses, and the application and training of skills behavioral artistry to behavior technicians and special education teachers by way of the Teaching Interaction Procedure.

Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of the presentation, participants will be able to:
(1) identify and define the core features of behavioral artistry;
(2) discuss how the teaching interaction procedure is an effective & evidence-based method to train staff in these skills;
(3) understand the purpose and importance of obtaining the skills of behavioral artistry in terms of a compassionate, responsive, and optimistic practice.
