“To adolescence, and beyond!”: Considerations for Meeting the Programming Needs of Older Children and Teens with Autism

Abstract: This discussion focuses on both clinical and non-clinical considerations that impact services provided for older individuals on the autism spectrum. Clinicians need to respond to the unique social, adaptive, and behavior needs of adolescents. Additional organizational considerations addressed in the presentation include criteria for client intake, discharge and transition planning, and maintaining insurance/financial support for older learners.
Learning Objectives:
- Audience members will gain the skills to identify and assess four unique clinical programming areas for learners over the age of 12 on the autism spectrum which should be considerations for therapy targets.
- Audience members will be able to list out and prepare for at least two examples each of exclusionary criteria, transition/discharge goals, and insurance funding considerations that can impact learners above the age of 12 in their organizations.
- Audience members will discriminate the difference between working with adolescence and with children diagnosed with ASD.
