Autism and ABA: A Parental Experience

Abstract:
For over 50 years, intervention methods informed by the principles of applied behavior analysis (ABA) have been empirically researched and clinically implemented with autistics/individuals diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Within this research and clinical practice, parents/caregivers have been an essential part of intervention. They are often required to seek quality services, secure funding, recruit staff, and help oversee their child’s program – all on top of being a parent. The purpose of this panel is to provide an outlet for the members of the panel to (a) provide their perspective on being a parent of a child diagnosed with ASD, (b) provide their perspective on behavioral intervention, (c) provide their perspective on anti-ABA sentiments, and (d) suggest ways that behavior analysts can improve their clinical practice.
Learning Objectives
The audience will identify three ways that they can approach behavioral intervention from a place of compassion and understanding of the parent perspective.
The audience will identify up to three different perspectives parents have with respect to behavioral intervention and how this can inform the intervention they provide.
The audience will identify three ways in which parents suggest we navigate anti-ABA sentiments.
